We attended an estate sale of a local icon today. It was the estate of Starkey Flythe who was an author, poet, magazine editor (The Saturday Evening Post), and collector. I was expecting good things and I found good things. I was hoping for a lot more good junk to dig through than they actually had but I managed to find some really cool stuff.
One funny thing, I picked up a Richard Avedon Book called Observations and carried it around with me until I got ready to check out. The lady asked me how much the book was marked and I said I didn't know so she flipped the book open (I had not bothered to do this - ha ha) and said "Oh here it is, $200", I told her to put it back. While I am sure that it is very collectible, I just couldn't make myself pay that kind of money for it. I do love Richard Avedon's photography though.
I did make some big purchases today, I bought an old store counter (marked on the bottom March 31, 1938) and an old artist easel.
Here are some pic's of both (please ignore the high grass - hope my yard guy comes soon!). They are in really good condition. The counter is oak and it's really beautiful. I normally don't purchase big things like this and neither does Mom but we sure did today. I won't even go into the horrifying ordeal of us trying to get these items home.
The rest of my haul was mostly smalls, but very interesting smalls, here is a sample:
An Art Deco Chrome and Bakelite Cigarette Box (needs to be polished)
A framed Vintage Child's Costume
An Electric Cocktail Shaker
Some Cherubs and Small Vintage Books
A Beautiful Soap Dish
I'm dying over this lamp, also got the suitcase/briefcase (not sure which)
A lovely piece of art and an old photograph (I love that it has a horse in it and he is looking right at the camera)
We had to make two trips over there to get all of our stuff, when I got home I was exhausted! It was fun though and I think I got some really interesting stuff and Mom did too, now to clean it all!
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

I can't imagine how hard it was to get the store counter home. Love the old books. I think I would have had to pass on the Avedon too.
ReplyDeleteVery cool stuff. I like that cigarette box a lot!
ReplyDeleteI have to restrain myself on the big stuff. I have a tendency to buy now and figure out how to haul it later.....
Wow, great store counter! Sounds like you had a really great time. Still can't believe you passed up a book for only $200. lol! thanks for sharing with SYC.
